Today's Assignment

I am intrigued by the project Jesus gives us in today's reading (Matthew 9: 1-17):  "But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."

Jesus is originally giving this assignment to the Pharisees who are criticizing Him for eating with sinners (as if they are not!). I seems so crucial for us to recognize that we truly are sinners. Paul certainly did this: " Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all." (I Timothy 1:15)

So then we have to reject the popular self-made, independent, "I'm O.K.","I can do it" spirit and accept that I am sin-sick and need the Great Physician. Then as we are healed by great Love, we have an overflow to pass on to others. We are enabled to open non-judgmental and loving arms to whoever God puts in our path. We will fulfill God's desire - mercy.

Lord, help us to be open to Your healing and mercy so we can pass it on. Only You can teach us what mercy really means. It tickles us that we can please You as we learn.
