Oh my! Can you bear to look at the reading today (John 19:1-16)? We have walked right into the fulfillment of Isaiah 53:3: "Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem." The first sentence of John 19 graphically sets the scene as Our Lord is scourged bloody, then pierced with thorns and mockery, and even repeatedly slapped on His precious face.
So how do we "Behold the Man!" as Pilate urged? I submit to you that we do it with wonder. We do it in awe. Jesus is truly being revealed as "the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world." (Revelation 13:8)

In this reading we have the privilege of understanding more of God's amazing love for us as the prophecies are being fulfilled blow by blow. " He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth." (Isaiah 13:7) Jesus says only one sentence in this whole reading and that was to let Pilate and us know Who is really in charge.
The Father is allowing the unthinkable, and it is happening for me and for you. It is time for us all to be silent - lost in wonder and awe.
